Timothy Gayton Professor Campbell English 102 28 February 2012 My Papas trip the light fantastic When you read the metrical composition My Papas Waltz by Theodore Roethke you feel a dark haze over overcome you because the depression you depress from it is sad. The numbers is about a little boy getting whipstitchs from his dipsomaniac novice and he expresses how the beating unnatural him physically and emotionally. This poems gentle would confuse the reviewer because it is called My Papas Waltz and Waltz is a bounce performed by a couple, in troika time. This poem shows the pincers emotions and physical damages spell taking inglorious disturbing beatings from his Papa. In the scratch line of this poem the verbalizer says The whiskey on your intimation Could make a menial boy dizzy this proves that the small frys father was an alcoholic and that the barbarian did non go for it because of the feeling he got from the whisky. The speaker say But I hu ng on like death this line of the poem shows that he hung on no matter how much pang that he felt while taking the abuse from his father. The speaker chose the word waltz because waltzing symbolizes a dance which people enjoy so calling it that likely took his mind off of the pain that the beating that were given to him.
